Clan del Golfo Emerges as Colombia's Dominant Criminal Organization Amidst Drug Trafficking and Violence

DEFENSE

The Clan del Golfo has become Colombia's largest criminal organization, controlling territories through drug trafficking, illegal mining, and extortion. Emerging in 2007 from the remnants of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, the group has expanded its influence significantly, operating across 390 municipalities by 2025.

The organization, now led by Jobanis de Jesús Ávila Villadiego, alias Chiquito Malo, has an estimated 9,000 armed members. It generates revenue primarily from cocaine, illegal gold mining, and extortion, with sophisticated money laundering operations integrating illicit funds into the legal economy.

The Clan's strategic territorial control includes alliances with international cartels and a decentralized command structure. In December 2025, it was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S., reflecting its global drug trafficking role. The group faces ongoing military pressure from the Colombian government while engaging in violent conflicts with the ELN and FARC dissidents.
