Guam Economic Development Authority Plans Advanced Manufacturing Incubator at University of Guam

DEFENSE

The Guam Economic Development Authority (GEDA) is pursuing the establishment of a GAMMA Research and Business Incubator Center at the University of Guam to enhance advanced manufacturing capabilities. Following a study visit to the Colorado School of Mines, GEDA aims to replicate successful business incubation models that facilitate the transition from research to viable business ventures.

GEDA CEO Christina Garcia emphasized the need for infrastructure that diversifies Guam's economy beyond tourism and defense. The proposed facility would integrate specialized education and business incubation, focusing on sectors such as auto parts and large equipment components.

The initiative is informed by a 2023 study highlighting opportunities in civilian manufacturing sectors. GEDA is also evaluating the facility's scope, costs, and equipment needs while addressing challenges related to attracting skilled personnel in this emerging industry.
