DRDO Develops Advanced Light Towed Artillery Gun System for Enhanced Mobility in Indian Army

DEFENSE

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing the Advanced Light Towed Artillery Gun System (ALTGS) to enhance the Indian Army's mobility in challenging terrains, targeting a weight under 15 tons while delivering 155mm/52-calibre performance. The system, capable of firing NATO-standard shells up to 48 kilometres with a burst rate of six rounds per minute, is set for internal trials by late 2026 and aims to reduce production costs by 20-30% compared to foreign alternatives. Initial orders are expected to exceed 300 units, supporting the Army's modernization and rapid deployment capabilities.
