Ember Reports Potential for Increased Geothermal Electricity Production in Europe
GEOTHERMAL
Ember's analysis indicates that geothermal electricity production in Europe could rise significantly due to advancements in drilling and reservoir engineering. Currently, geothermal contributes less than 0.5% of the global electricity mix, but by 2030, an estimated 1.5 GW of new capacity could be added annually worldwide.
The report highlights Hungary's potential for 28 GW of capacity, with additional potential in Poland, Germany, and France. If new capacities are deployed, geothermal could generate approximately 301.3 TWh annually in the EU by 2025, significantly impacting coal and gas generation.
