Ethiopia Completes Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Largest Hydropower Project in Africa
HYDRO POWER
Ethiopia has officially commissioned the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa's largest hydropower project, on September 9, 2025, after 14 years of construction and a cost of $5 billion. With a capacity of 5,150 megawatts and an annual production of approximately 15,700 gigawatt hours, the GERD exemplifies a shift towards self-reliant development in Africa, contrasting with Nigeria's numerous abandoned infrastructure projects. The project was primarily financed through domestic revenues, showcasing Ethiopia's commitment to advancing its energy sector.
