Gem City Shipbuilding Proposes U.S. Navy Shipyard at Former Erie Coke Site
DEFENSE
Gem City Shipbuilding has proposed converting the former Erie Coke Plant site into a U.S. Navy shipyard, with estimated project costs between $250 million and $750 million, funded by public and private sources.
The initiative aims to create jobs and stimulate community development in Erie, although the heavily contaminated site will require a lengthy cleanup process. U.S. Congressman Mike Kelly highlighted the project's potential economic benefits, contingent on careful planning.
