German Navy to Introduce NH90 MRFH Sea Tiger Helicopters for Enhanced NATO Anti-Submarine Operations

DEFENSE

The German Navy is set to debut the NH90 MRFH Sea Tiger, a state-of-the-art shipborne helicopter designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). Derived from the NATO Frigate Helicopter version, it features a composite airframe, fly-by-wire controls, and advanced avionics.

The helicopter is equipped with dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and can deploy MU90 torpedoes and Marte ER missiles. The procurement of 31 Sea Tigers was approved by the German Parliament in November 2020, with delivery scheduled from late 2025 over five to six years.

The Sea Tiger enhances endurance and sensor capabilities compared to the Westland Sea Lynx Mk88A it replaces and is designed as a combat helicopter, unlike the transport-optimized NH90 NTH Sea Lion. This program represents a €2.7 billion investment in Germany's naval capabilities, aimed at strengthening NATO's maritime situational awareness, particularly in the Baltic and North Seas.
