Germany's Hydrogen Storage Expansion: Projects and Capacities in Etzel and Beyond

ELECTROLYZERHYDROGEN

Two large components for the surface facility of Germany's pilot hydrogen storage project H2CAST have arrived in Etzel, Ostfriesland. The project is part of a broader initiative in Northern Germany, which aims to become Europe's hydrogen depot, leveraging 80% of the continent's salt cavern storage capacity.

Storengy plans to construct Germany's largest pure hydrogen storage facility at the Harsefeld gas storage site, with two caverns capable of holding 14,000 tons of hydrogen, operational by 2034. Uniper is testing underground hydrogen storage in Krummhörn, with a goal of expanding to 430 GWh capacity by the late 2030s.

Other projects include a 100-MW electrolyzer in Wilhelmshaven and the Kottiger Hook site in Gronau-Epe, which will feature Germany's first commercial hydrogen cavern. EWE AG is also retrofitting a cavern for hydrogen storage, expected to begin operations in 2027. These initiatives are supported by the EU and aim to enhance hydrogen infrastructure across the country.
