Government Plans to Integrate Nuclear Power into National Grid by 2034

GEOTHERMAL

The Kenyan government is accelerating its nuclear power initiative, aiming to incorporate nuclear energy into the national grid by 2034. Energy Permanent Secretary Alex Wachira announced that this diversification could significantly lower electricity costs, projecting a reduction in the average weighted cost of power from 9.45 US cents to between 4 and 5.5 cents.

The 1,000 MW nuclear plant, set to be constructed in Siaya, is expected to cost Ksh 367 billion. However, the operational management of the facility and the necessary regulatory framework remain unresolved as preparations advance.
