Göteborg Energi Commissions Biomass-Fired Boiler to Replace Fossil Gas in Gothenburg
Göteborg Energi AB has commissioned a new biomass-fired steam boiler at its Rya combined heat and power plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, marking its largest climate investment at SEK 2.53 billion (≈ EUR 231 million). This new unit allows the plant to provide 100 percent renewable district heat, eliminating dependence on fossil natural gas and significantly reducing emissions.
Groundbreaking took place on November 29, 2023, with operational start on November 17, 2025. The biomass boiler, utilizing bubbling fluidized bed technology, produces 156 MW of heat and 39 MW of electricity.
Valmet supplied the boiler and ancillary systems, while Raumaster provided fuel handling solutions. With the integration of this unit, Göteborg Energi aims to enhance energy security and reduce fossil CO2 emissions by 30,000-150,000 tonnes annually, improving environmental metrics for district heating and stabilizing heat prices.
