Guyana's Gas to Energy Project Set for 2026 Completion, Promising 50% Electricity Cost Reduction
The Gas to Energy (GtE) project in Guyana is expected to be completed by mid-2026, delivering a 50% reduction in electricity costs for consumers on the national grid. Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed that the project includes a 300-megawatt combined cycle power plant and a natural gas liquids facility located in Wales, West Bank Demerara.
The project will utilize natural gas piped from the Liza Field in the Stabroek Block, with ExxonMobil having laid the pipeline. US-based Lindsayca has a US$759 million contract for the facility construction.
Recent disputes within the contractor consortium have been resolved, allowing progress to continue. The GtE project is part of a broader government strategy to enhance the energy mix with renewable sources, including plans for 100 megawatts of renewable energy systems over the next five years.
