Gwangju and Muan Agree to Integrate Airports with 1 Trillion Won Support Fund
Gwangju Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do Province, and Muan County, along with various ministries, have agreed to integrate Gwangju Civil-Military Airport and Muan International Airport. This decision aims to support regional development and address community interests.
The relocation process began in 2013, but faced delays due to noise concerns from Muan County. The agreement includes 1 trillion Korean won in support for resident programs in Muan County, though funding sources remain unspecified.
The relocation is set to be completed by the end of 2027, coinciding with the opening of the KTX line to Muan Airport. Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-back indicated that laws may need to be amended to expedite the relocation. Additionally, a Honam Regional Aviation Office will be established, and there are discussions about renaming the airport to 'Kim Dae-jung Airport.'
