ICFO Optimizes Fluorescence Quantum Yield to Enhance Organic Solar Cell Efficiency

SOLAR ENERGY

ICFO has developed a method to improve the fluorescence quantum yield (FQY) in organic solar cells (OSCs), leading to increased open-circuit voltage (Voc). The research team engineered the interface between light-absorbing and charge-transporting layers, demonstrating that optimizing FQY can significantly reduce energy loss as heat.

The study indicated that a 5 nm lithium fluoride layer enhanced FQY by 18%, resulting in a Voc increase of 12 mV. This methodology may be applicable to various photovoltaic technologies.
