IIT-Madras Develops Roadmap for Green Hydrogen Production in India
Researchers at IIT-Madras have developed a roadmap to enhance green hydrogen production in India, supporting the country's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. The study, conducted in partnership with the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy, emphasizes the role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing challenging sectors like industry and transport.
With India's Green Hydrogen Mission targeting 5 million metric tons of annual production by 2030, the research highlights the efficiency of Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers compared to traditional systems. Key findings indicate that different configurations of PEM electrolysers affect environmental impacts, and a tiered classification system is proposed to communicate hydrogen quality. The study also addresses securing critical raw materials for electrolysers, ensuring the reliability of India's green hydrogen infrastructure.
