India Reduces LPG Costs for Ujjwala Yojana Beneficiaries Amid Global Price Increases
The Union Government of India has lowered the effective cost of domestic LPG cylinders for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries by nearly 39%, from Rs 903 in August 2023 to Rs 553 in November 2025. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that while the Saudi Contract Price increased by 21% during the same period, domestic prices dropped by approximately 22%.
To support low-income households, targeted subsidies for PMUY beneficiaries have been increased to Rs 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to nine refills in FY 2025-26. Average annual LPG consumption among PMUY households rose from 3.68 refills in FY 2021-22 to 4.47 in FY 2024-25.
The government has established 8,017 new LPG distributorships since April 2016, with a focus on rural areas. The effective LPG price for PMUY households remains lower than in neighboring countries, and contracts have been finalized to import 2.2 million tonnes of US-origin LPG for 2026.
