INS Sagardhwani was launched on January 16 from Kochi for the fifth Sagar Maitri mission, aimed at enhancing scientific collaboration among Indian Ocean Rim countries. The mission will conduct joint ocean research with eight nations, retracing routes from the 1962-1965 International Indian Ocean Expedition, and is part of DRDO's efforts to improve Underwater Domain Awareness for the Indian Navy.
