Israeli Startup AIR Develops Heavy Cargo Drone for Military and Disaster Response
Israeli aerospace startup AIR is developing an autonomous cargo eVTOL, the AIR Cargo platform, based on its piloted AIR ONE program. CEO Rani Plaut emphasized the importance of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in military logistics, noting their current limitations in payload capacity and operational range.
Most existing VTOL drones can only carry under 100 pounds and operate within 10 miles, which hinders larger resupply missions. AIR aims to address this gap by enabling UAS to transport hundreds of pounds of equipment, medical devices, and other supplies.
Plaut highlighted a shift in procurement strategies for militaries, suggesting that decision-makers may prefer fewer heavy-lift UAS for efficiency. The AIR Cargo platform is designed to enhance capabilities for defense, disaster response, and commercial logistics, emphasizing the necessity for cost-effective and reliable aerial logistics solutions.
