Japan's ATLA Begins Prototyping Scramjet-Powered Hypersonic Missile with MHI Partnership

Japan's Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has initiated the prototyping of a scramjet-powered hypersonic missile in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), with a budget of JPY73.2 billion allocated from the FY 2026 defense budget. The project aims to enhance Japan's defense capabilities against potential invasions and is expected to be completed by 2031, alongside the development of a Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile for deployment in 2026.
