Japan's ATLA Unveils New Surface-To-Ship Missile with Advanced Maneuverability
DEFENSE
Japan's Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has unveiled a new surface-to-ship missile featuring advanced maneuverability, including high-G terminal maneuvers to evade shipborne air defense systems. With a range exceeding 200 km, the missile significantly outperforms the current Type 12 missile, allowing the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force to engage threats from a safer distance. Developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, this missile marks the beginning of a modular family of weapons aimed at addressing increasing maritime militarization in the East and South China Seas, with deployment expected in the mid-2020s.
