Kamala Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh Receives Environmental Clearance After 30 Years

The Centre's expert panel has granted environmental clearance for the 1,720-MW Kamala hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh. The project, proposed by NHPC Ltd, will require the felling of over 23 lakh trees and affect 126 villages, impacting approximately 30,000 residents.

The dam aims to provide peaking power and flood moderation but faces significant ecological concerns that necessitate careful mitigation measures. The project has an estimated cost of Rs 23,764 crore and has taken nearly three decades to progress.
