Kenya Acquires Israeli SPYDER Air Defense System to Enhance Protection Against Drone Threats

DEFENSE

Kenya has received the Israeli-made SPYDER air defense system, which includes PYTHON-5 infrared and I-DERBY radar-guided missiles. This system provides Kenya with a mobile, all-weather defense capable of intercepting a variety of aerial threats, including drones, at short to medium ranges.

The acquisition is linked to Kenya's Ministry of Defence budget, with financing structured rather than ceremonial. The SPYDER can engage targets up to 100 km, depending on configuration, and is designed to protect critical infrastructure against asymmetric threats. The move is part of a broader security relationship with Israel, dating back to 2011, and aims to bolster Kenya's defense capabilities amid increasing regional threats from groups like Al-Shabaab.
