KETRACO Signs Sh40.4bn PPP with Africa50 and Power Grid Corporation to Expand Kenya's Power Network

GEOTHERMAL

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has signed a Sh40.4 billion ($311 million) Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement with Africa50 and Power Grid Corporation of India to expand and modernize Kenya's power transmission network. The project will be entirely financed, designed, constructed, operated, and maintained by the private sector, covering the 400kV Lessos-Loosuk line and the 220kV Kibos-Kakamega-Musaga line.

These lines will enhance grid stability, support the evacuation of geothermal power, and extend high-voltage connectivity to Western Kenya. The project aligns with Kenya's Least Cost Power Development Plan and KETRACO's Transmission Master Plan, with construction expected to commence within 12 months. The private partners will manage the infrastructure for a 30-year concession period, with KETRACO set to make performance-based payments after independent verification of works.
