KNDS and Lithuania Defense Ministry Establish Leopard 2A8 Assembly Workshop in Kaunas

DEFENSE

KNDS Deutschland and the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense have validated an assembly workshop in Kaunas for Leopard 2A8 tanks, marking a significant development for the armored vehicle sector in Europe. This initiative, part of the Common Procurement Agreement, includes five years of training and support, aiming to reduce delivery times and establish a maintenance base.

The workshop, operated by Lithuania Defense Services, a joint venture of Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland, is designed to deliver up to 41 Leopard 2A8 tanks to Lithuania. The contract also covers professional training and logistical support, enhancing local capabilities in production and maintenance.

Lithuania joined the Common Procurement Agreement on December 19, 2024, facilitating collective orders and improving contract execution among participating countries. This operation illustrates the European land defense sector's adaptability and aims to strengthen local competencies while providing a deterrent signal in a region facing strategic challenges.
