KT Wins Public Security Projects Amid Hacking Controversies and Investigations
KT has secured several public security projects this year despite ongoing controversies related to internal server hacking and unauthorized micro-payment incidents. The company began supplying approximately 11,000 tablets and smartphones to police patrol cars nationwide after winning a National Police Agency bid in July, previously held by SK Telecom, which lost due to low security scores from a hacking incident.
KT itself faced malware issues on its servers and is under police investigation for allegedly disposing of hacked servers. In June, KT won a 19.5 billion Korean won bodycam project, followed by a 3.8 billion won wireless communication project in August and a 20.7 billion won defense 5G infrastructure pilot project in July. Experts call for re-evaluation of KT's eligibility for public contracts due to the security incidents, which could lead to contract cancellations if false information regarding security history is found.
