L3Harris Advances Production of Tracking Satellites for Missile Defense Against China and North Korea
L3Harris Technologies has commenced full-scale production at its $100 million satellite integration and test facility in Palm Bay, Florida, focusing on developing next-generation tracking satellites for missile defense against threats from China, North Korea, and other adversaries. The facility, which began operations shortly after an August ribbon-cutting, is currently assembling eight satellites for the Space Development Agency (SDA).
These satellites will be part of the SDA's Tranche 1 constellation, expanding to 154 satellites in low-Earth orbit. L3Harris has also received a contract potentially worth $919 million for 18 infrared space vehicles for the SDA's Tranche 2 program, expected to reach full production by mid-2026.
This initiative aligns with the U.S. defense strategy to counter evolving missile threats, including hypersonic glide vehicles. The facility is anticipated to create 100 new jobs in Brevard County, with average salaries around $105,000.
