Laos has inaugurated a 1,000-megawatt solar power project in Oudomxay Province, developed by CGN Energy Technology (Laos) Co., Ltd. in partnership with the Lao government. Construction began in September 2024 under a concession agreement.

The project covers 2,090 hectares across seven villages, employing approximately 800 specialists and laborers. As of May 29, land clearing and landmine removal were 95.74% complete, with internal roads over 81% finished and electrical pole installation nearing 60%.

Once operational, Phase I is expected to generate 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, supplying power to about 10 million households, transmitted to China's Yunnan Province. The project is part of the Northern Laos Interconnected Clean Energy Base, aiming to position northern Laos as a clean energy hub. Other solar initiatives are also underway in collaboration with South Korean and U.S. firms, further diversifying the energy mix and enhancing cross-border cooperation.
