U.S. lawmakers from St. Mary Parish are advocating for the inclusion of South Louisiana's small shipyards in upcoming defense contracts, highlighting their competitiveness and capacity for rapid innovation.
In a letter to Secretary Pete Hegspeth, they emphasized the shipyards' ongoing projects for the Navy and Coast Guard and urged the Department of War to consider them to bolster America's shipbuilding capabilities. Currently, shipbuilding employment in St. Mary stands at nearly 800.
