Lime Nitrogen Additive Reduces Methane Emissions from Manure Storage in Germany

NATURAL GASBIOFUELS

A lime nitrogen-based additive has been shown to reduce methane emissions from manure storage by up to 97% during summer conditions, according to the EMeRGE project by the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy and Alzchem Trostberg GmbH. The additive enhances nitrogen efficiency and may lower mineral fertilizer costs by up to 22%, while still allowing for effective biogas production. Future research will focus on incorporating these findings into climate calculators and greenhouse gas inventories.
