Main Street Project Finds Shelter for Mostyn Park Camp Residents After City Clearance
Main Street Project (MSP) sought temporary shelter for individuals displaced from a camp in Mostyn Park after the city enforced a new ban on encampments that took effect on November 17. The camp, which had experienced multiple fires, was deemed a priority for clearance.
Following the eviction, MSP, alongside the West Central Women's Resource Centre, coordinated with the Salvation Army to secure shelter for the seven individuals they housed. The city has not clarified the enforcement of the ban, raising concerns about the safety of unsheltered individuals during winter.
The ban prohibits encampments within 50 meters of schools and daycares, and 30 meters of transit shelters and other public facilities. Since the ban's implementation, the city has cleared 10 encampment sites. City council is scheduled to vote on a managed encampment pilot project later this month to address housing issues.
