Malaysia Explores Floating Solar Solutions Amid Land Scarcity for Renewable Energy

SOLAR ENERGY

Malaysia is turning to floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems to address land scarcity for solar energy, aiming to enhance its renewable energy mix in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap. Tenaga Nasional Berhad plans a 2.5 GW hybrid hydro-floating solar project, while the Energy Commission has set quotas for FPV in solar auctions, despite the lack of formal guidelines. While FPV has higher initial costs, it promises better energy yields and scalability, with Malaysia holding an estimated 16.6 GW potential at existing reservoirs.
