Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk Launches Combined Heat and Power System for Sustainability
The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk has launched a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system aimed at reducing carbon emissions and operational costs. This $1.6 million project, completed in 18 months, will enhance energy efficiency by generating electricity and reusing waste heat.
The system, powered by natural gas, provides heating in winter and cooling in summer. This initiative is part of the aquarium's 10-year strategic plan and supports its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035, following a national climate commitment made by 24 aquariums in 2022.
The aquarium received the Green Award for Innovation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in September, highlighting its commitment to environmental leadership. The project was managed by MHR Development and funded by various partners including Chubb and M&T Bank.
