Michigan Advances Aerial Mobility with State Initiative and Drone Startups in Detroit

DEFENSE

Detroit is transitioning from a 'car town' to a center for advanced air mobility, supported by the Michigan Advanced Air Mobility Initiative announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The initiative, led by the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification, aims to develop drone use cases and establish Michigan as a hub for air mobility startups.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) is collaborating with state departments, such as Transportation and Agriculture, to explore drone technology applications. Michigan Central, a 30-acre innovation campus in Detroit, hosts numerous drone startups and has facilitated over 800 drone flights in its Advanced Aerial Innovation Region.

The campus also features the Aerial Ops Center for drone operators. Current drone use cases focus on data collection, delivery, and defense, with an emphasis on leveraging drone capabilities to reinvent various business models.
