Military Sealift Command Implements At-Sea Engine Overhaul Initiative
The Military Sealift Command (MSC) has launched an initiative to perform ship engine overhauls while vessels are underway, moving away from traditional pier-side maintenance. This approach, modeled after commercial shipping practices, aims to enhance maintenance efficiency and reduce shipyard delays.
The initiative is supported by the OEM, Everllence, which provides technicians to work alongside MSC crews during the overhauls. Initial trials on the USNS William McLean demonstrated significant time savings, with engine overhauls completed in less than half the time compared to traditional methods.
The program is expected to improve crew technical skills and mission readiness, while reducing delays associated with engine maintenance. MSC operates approximately 140 civilian-crewed ships, supporting U.S. Navy operations and logistical missions worldwide.
