NASA Advances Commercial Space Communications with Next-Gen Satellite Relay Demonstrations

DEFENSE

NASA is progressing towards commercial space communications by demonstrating next-generation satellite relay capabilities, aiming to retire the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) system. The Communications Services Project, managed by NASA's SCaN Program, involves six U.S. companies testing commercial satellite communication services.

Notable demonstrations include Amazon Leo's optical links for high-rate data exchange, SES Space & Defense's services using O3b mPOWER satellites, and SpaceX's optical communications via Starlink. Telesat's Lightspeed network is under development for optical data exchange, while Viasat utilizes its satellite networks for launch telemetry and high-data rate exchanges. NASA plans to acquire satellite relay services from U.S. providers by 2031, allowing a focus on deep space missions like Artemis and future human Mars missions.
