Navy to Upgrade MEKO-Class Frigates with €390 Million Modernization Program

DEFENSE

The Defense Ministry is launching a €390 million modernization program for the Navy's four MEKO-class frigates, aimed at extending their operational lifespan by 15 years. Key upgrades include new electronic systems and integration with the Tacticos combat management system, with the first upgraded frigate expected by late 2028 and all enhancements completed by 2030. Thales Netherlands will provide sensors and electronics, while SSMART will oversee integration, with additional phases planned for communications and anti-drone capabilities.
