Netherlands Contracts Rheinmetall for 22 Skyranger 30 Air Defense Systems to Enhance Aerial Threat Protection

DEFENSE

The Netherlands has signed a contract with Rheinmetall for the acquisition of 22 Skyranger 30 air defense systems, aimed at improving protection against short-range aerial threats, particularly drones. This initiative follows a January 2025 policy decision to enhance ground-based air defense capabilities.

The Skyranger 30 systems will be mounted on ACSV Gen 5 armored vehicles and are designed to counter unmanned aerial systems, with an engagement range of approximately 5 km. The systems will support both deployed forces and homeland defense missions, safeguarding military assets and critical infrastructure like the Port of Rotterdam.

The program includes mobile and static configurations, tactical control nodes, and training simulators, with production split between Rheinmetall Switzerland and Rheinmetall Nederland. First deliveries are expected before the end of 2028, with project completion by 2029. The procurement is part of a broader layered air defense strategy within the Dutch Joint Ground-based Air Defence Command.
