New Biogas Plant in Karachi to Reduce CO2 Emissions by 300 Tons Annually

NATURAL GASBIOFUELS

A newly completed biogas plant in Bagh-e-Ibn-e-Qasim, Karachi, is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 250 to 300 tons annually by converting organic waste into energy. The 150-cubic-meter facility, built by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, processes 1.5 to 2 tons of organic waste daily, producing 120 to 150 cubic meters of biogas with a methane content of 55 to 65 percent.

The energy generated is equivalent to the monthly usage of 45 to 55 LPG cylinders. The project also offers economic benefits by reducing waste transportation and landfill costs, and produces organic fertilizer for municipal parks. Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab advocated for further biogas projects in areas with high organic waste, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy initiatives for a sustainable Karachi.
