NATURAL GAS

The New Zealand Government will contract for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility, funded by a $2-$4/MWh levy on electricity users. Energy Minister Simon Watts stated the aim is to finalize a contract by mid-2026, with operations expected by late 2027 or early 2028. The initiative is projected to save the country approximately $265 million annually, equating to $50 per household, and safeguard around 2000 jobs while enhancing energy security.
