New Zealand to Construct LNG Import Facility in Taranaki by 2028 for Energy Security
NATURAL GAS
New Zealand plans to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import facility in Taranaki to enhance energy security and economic growth. The facility is expected to be operational by 2027 or early 2028, following a government contract signing in mid-2026. The project aims to address declining gas supplies and reduce reliance on coal and diesel, potentially generating NZ$1.2 billion annually by 2035 and protecting approximately 2,000 jobs.
