Nigeria's Decade of Gas Initiative: Plans to Boost Gas Production and Infrastructure by 2030

NATURAL GAS

As of early 2025, Nigeria holds 210.54 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas reserves, the largest in Africa and eighth globally, yet ranks third in Africa for production, behind Algeria and Egypt. Current production figures show Nigeria at 3.8 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bscfd), compared to Algeria's 9.7 Bscfd and Egypt's 6.2 Bscfd.

The Decade of Gas Initiative (DoG) aims to enhance Nigeria's gas sector through key strategies, including infrastructure development, policy reform, and expanding gas utilization across domestic and industrial sectors. Specific goals include attracting $30 billion in investments, launching 70 new gas projects, and training 10,000 personnel for the sector.

The initiative also seeks to increase production to 10 Bscfd by 2030. Recent achievements in the oil and gas sector include securing $8 billion in investments and advancing projects like the Shell HI Field and TotalEnergies' Ubeta project. However, Nigeria faces significant challenges in closing the production gap with Algeria and Egypt.
