NIS 220 Million Redirected from Arab Economic Development to Police for Crime Combat

DEFENSE

The Israeli government will redirect over NIS 220 million from a program aimed at Arab economic development to the police for combating nationalistic crime in Arab communities. This decision, made during a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, comes amid ongoing violence in Arab society and is seen as a step in a broader plan to enhance security.

The funds will primarily support the police and Shin Bet, with allocations in the 2026 budget for technology upgrades and the establishment of a unit to combat weapon smuggling. Critics, including Arab leaders and coexistence organizations, argue that this diversion undermines efforts to address systemic issues contributing to crime, such as poverty and lack of education.

The proposal will be reviewed by the Knesset Finance Committee, where opposition is anticipated. The diversion is controversial, especially as Social Equality Minister May Golan faces scrutiny over allegations of fraud.
