NRC Grants 20-Year License Renewals for Illinois' Clinton and Dresden Nuclear Plants

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has renewed licenses for Constellation's Clinton and Dresden nuclear power plants in Illinois for 20 years. The Clinton plant, a 1092-MWe boiling water reactor operational since 1987, has received its initial license renewal, allowing operation through 2047.

Dresden's two BWR units, operational since 1970 and 1971, have obtained subsequent renewals, enabling operation through 2049 and 2051. Constellation is investing over $370 million for upgrades, including new auxiliary transformers, equipment chillers at Clinton, and a main power transformer at Dresden.

Financial viability for continued operation is supported by a 20-year power purchase agreement with Meta, benefiting Clinton's future. Local officials highlight the importance of these plants for community development and job security.
