NSF Reviews NCAR Operations to Enhance Weather Research and Modeling Infrastructure
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is reviewing the operations of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to improve its research and observational capabilities. NSF aims to maintain high-quality infrastructure for weather modeling and space weather forecasting.
The agency will engage with partner organizations and the research community to gather feedback for restructuring NCAR's functions. Planned actions include transferring stewardship of the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputer, divesting or transferring two NSF-managed aircraft, and refocusing research on areas like seasonal weather prediction and severe storms. A Dear Colleague Letter will outline the next steps in this process.
