Pentagon's New Task Force Granted Authority Over Counter-Small Drone Acquisition Programs
The Pentagon's new counter-small-drone task force, Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF-401), has been given significant authority over acquisition programs related to small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS). This includes the power to set technical standards, conduct field tests, and prevent military services from acquiring systems that do not meet performance criteria.
Under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), no component of the Department of Defense may procure a counter-sUAS system without validation from JIATF-401, although there is a strict process for overriding this veto by senior acquisition officials. The task force aims to standardize testing methods and act as a clearinghouse for counter-drone operations data, enhancing coordination across military services. JIATF-401 has already made progress in delivering requirements and equipment within its first 100 days and is focused on developing solutions for current counter-drone challenges.
