Petronas Collaborates with Stakeholders on Controversial LNG Project in Canada

NATURAL GAS

Petronas is collaborating with all stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, to ensure safe operations globally amid reports of environmental and social impacts from its liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Canada. The company stated it would submit findings to LNG Canada, managing a project in British Columbia that exports LNG via the 670-kilometer Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline.

Petronas is involved through its subsidiary Petronas Canada LNG Ltd (PCLL) as one of five joint venture partners. On December 8, Indigenous leaders from British Columbia presented a report at Petronas headquarters detailing harms from the CGL pipeline, alleging over 60 regulatory actions against sediment deposition and fish habitat damage.

They claimed increased LNG tanker traffic could lead to significant whale fatalities. The report asserts that Petronas failed to conduct meaningful due diligence regarding Indigenous rights and that consultations did not meet legal standards for consent.
