R25 Billion Limpopo Water Project Secures Funding to Enhance Mining Growth
The Badirammogo Water User Association (BWUA) has achieved financial close on the first phase of a R25 billion bulk water supply project in Limpopo, aimed at enhancing water security and supporting mining development. The project, which will unfold over 10 years in six phases, is expected to create around 42,000 jobs and provide potable water to approximately 390,000 people.
Stage 1, costing R8.5 billion, will take 33 months to complete and includes renewable energy components such as solar plants and hydropower turbines. Infrastructure will enhance water supply from De Hoop and Flag Boshielo Dams to communities in Sekhukhune District and Mogalakwena Local Municipality.
Funded partly by an $86 million loan from Climate Fund Managers and supported by commercial banks, the project emphasizes local content and strict ESG standards. It is anticipated to facilitate mining expansion and boost mineral exports.
