Robotics and AI Enhance Hydropower Operations Globally
Hydropower operators are increasingly utilizing robotics and AI to enhance operational efficiency and safety. EDP and Alisys have implemented quadrupedal robots at hydropower plants, aimed at performing autonomous routine inspections and instrument readings.
The project, utilizing Boston Dynamics' Spot robot in Spain, demonstrated improved plant efficiency and reliable electricity production. A computer vision system was developed to read instruments at EDP's Tanes plant in Asturias, Spain, with successful autonomous navigation and task completion.
Concurrently, Vattenfall is deploying AI and robotics for data analysis and operational improvements at its Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant. China Yangtze Power has introduced three specialized robots for inspection and maintenance tasks in hydropower stations, including an underwater inspection robot and devices for concrete and steel pipe inspections. These advancements represent a shift towards integrating robotics into renewable energy infrastructure.
