Russian Iskander Missile with US Components Kills Ukrainian Boy in Kryvyi Rih Attack

DEFENSE

On April 4, a Russian Iskander 9M723 missile, utilizing U.S. technology, struck a playground in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, killing 20 people, including nine children. Launched from Russia, the missile reached its target at supersonic speeds.

Investigators determined that parts from American companies like Intel and Texas Instruments were used in the missile, despite sanctions prohibiting their sale to Russia. By late 2025, over 400 Iskander missiles had been launched, with significant foreign components identified in their construction.

Ukrainian military intelligence reported a rise in foreign parts in Russian weapons, with about 70% sourced from U.S. companies. The attack left 8-year-old Matviy Holovko severely injured and resulted in the death of his mother. Investigations are ongoing, with four Russian military officials charged in absentia with war crimes related to the attack.
