Samoa Villagers Await Compensation After HMNZS Manawanui Disaster Over a Year Later
More than a year after the sinking of the New Zealand navy vessel HMNZS Manawanui off the coast of Upolu, Samoa, locals are still awaiting compensation. The New Zealand government made a SAT$10 million (approximately NZ$6 million) payment to Samoa in May 2025, but distribution has not occurred.
The vessel sank after crashing into the Tafitoala reef on October 6, 2024, leaking diesel and debris into the water. A precautionary fishing ban was initially set at five kilometers around the wreck, later reduced to two kilometers, but locals report a significant decline in marine life.
Community leaders have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency regarding the compensation process. While some residents remain hopeful for resolution under the new government, concerns persist regarding the adequacy of the compensation for environmental and economic damages caused by the incident.
