Shutdown of Ivanpah CSP Facility in California Highlights Challenges for Concentrated Solar Power

NATURAL GASENERGY STORAGESOLAR ENERGY

The Ivanpah Solar Energy Generating System in California, once the world's largest concentrated solar power (CSP) facility, is set to shut down due to operational challenges and contract issues. Initially designed with a capacity of 440 MW, it was reduced to approximately 387 MW to protect local wildlife.

Commissioned in 2014, it struggled to meet supply obligations, operating at only 40% capacity. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has sought approval to cancel its contract, prompting plans to close at least two of the units.

Additionally, reliance on natural gas for operational support contributed to its inability to maintain compliance with California's emissions regulations. In Australia, Vast Renewables, which aimed to utilize CSP technology for molten salt energy storage, faced similar issues and entered voluntary receivership after incurring significant losses and failing to secure necessary funding.
